Matteo Ferran Structural Engineers, PLLC (MFSE) is a small, woman-owned structural engineering firm in historic Old Town Alexandria, VA. With our office in a rehabilitated 19th century warehouse, our studio celebrates energized and revitalized environments for living and working, with an experienced team of professional collaborators.

MFSE cultivates a broad and versatile perspective as structural engineers, knowing that a healthy dialogue between the holistic view and a deep focus on details leads to meaningful and successful designs. We are dedicated to sensibly sustain the valuable architectural resources we have, while creatively and thoughtfully designing new and durable forms. Our work requires experience and understanding of the extant, built environment, combined with a rigorous application of the codes and safety standards of our time. In doing so, our work engages the lineage of design and construction, where historic systems and cutting edge technologies find common ground.

As preservation engineers, our team is fully conversant with the Secretary of Interior Standards as well as international standards such as the Venice Charter and other doctrinal texts for conservation and restoration as adopted by ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites). We apply our technical expertise to the goal of sustaining the value and appreciation of our precious architectural resources, doing so in a principled approach serving the collective determination of best practices for today’s conservation efforts.
